Rumors Link Panthers to Pro Bowl Quarterback Ahead of Free Agency

The Carolina Panthers handled one major checklist on their offseason calendar with the hiring of new head coach Frank Reich and a start to filling out the rest of the names on his coaching staff. But, there are still a few major question marks, specifically around the future at quarterback.

If the Panthers are looking for an upgrade over the group that includes Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker, they can do so through free agency. In fact, Carolina has been linked to a potential big-name replacement in free agency.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport confirmed that the Las Vegas Raiders released quarterback Derek Carr into free agency, mostly to avoid his $40 million in guaranteed money. It also catapults him to the top of the available free agent list.

Rapoport believes the Panthers will be "among the teams" interested in his services.

Carolina desperately needs to figure out their quarterback situation. The combination of Darnold, Walker and former Panther Baker Mayfield put a dismal product on the field last season. The trio combined for just 16 passing touchdowns and a whopping 13 interceptions.

If Carolina has any hopes of snapping a five-year playoff drought, they'll need better play at QB. And no matter what way you look at it, Derek Carr is a clear upgrade over the current options on roster.
