The Kansas City Royals have been unable to overcome a poor start to the 2022 season and remain at the bottom of the American League Central. The team lines up to be sellers at the trade deadline as a result and recent reports suggest yet another veteran hitter is going to be shopped around in talks.
Andrew Benintendi Trade Rumors
The Royals are "actively seeking a buyer" for outfielder Andrew Benintendi, according to Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe. This comes shortly after the news that Kansas City is contemplating trading star player Whit Merrifeld, which would make a clear statement that a rebuild is coming.
Manager Mike Matheny's team is a putrid 26-44 on the year, but that isn't because of Benintendi's efforts. The 27-year-old is slashing .299/.366/.391 across 69 games played and is tied for fifth in the AL with 78 hits. Keep in mind Benintendi also earned a Gold Glove for his defensive prowess in 2021.
With Benintendi becoming a free agent at the end of the season, he becomes a perfect rental target for contending teams in need of outfield depth or left-handed hitting. The Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers are just a few squads that fit that mold heading into July.
Benintendi is still owed $4.4 million in salary, so moving him sooner rather than later could save the Royals some cash. Seeking a talented minor leaguer or two in return would be a beneficial move and allow space for a Triple-A standout like Nate Eaton to make their MLB debut sometime this summer.
