Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell had to be expecting the worst when catcher Tyler Stephenson was slow to get up after taking a foul ball right off the mask Saturday. This is a player that has already suffered a concussion this season, but immediate tests suggest that isn't the case this time around.

Tyler Stephenson Injury Update

Cincinnati fans can collectively take a sigh of relief for the time being. Bell's comments make it seem like Stephenson was just a bit banged up from the play and tests taken afterward support that notion. The Reds cannot afford to have their best hitter in the lineup sidelined given how well he has played.

Stephenson has posted an impressive slash line of .324/.390/.574 through his first 23 games played (77 plate appearances). All three of those marks rank first among Cincinnati players in 2022. The 25-year-old has also racked up 13 runs scored, 5 double, 4 home runs, 19 RBI and 1 stolen base.

The Reds are sitting Stephenson on Sunday, but a return to the lineup seems imminent early this week. Anything that can be done to avoid another stint on the injured list would be a smart move. Stephenson missed two weeks of action after colliding with Luke Voit at home plate back on April 19.

"If there’s ever any doubt at all, you play it on the safe side always with that. It was a real relief when we found out he’d be ok."
