Red Sox Playoff Odds Suggest Team Will Miss Postseason Ahead of Series vs Yankees

Heading into a weekend series with the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox are a longshot to qualify for the 2019 MLB postseason. Sitting 16.5 games out in the AL East and 6.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot, the Red Sox have their collective backs up against the wall.
With Boston looking up at the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East and needing to leapfrog the Cleveland Indians and Oakland Athletics in the Wild Card standings, the Red Sox playoff odds seemingly get more bleak by the day.

Yankees fans: Have you seen the current standings?
Red Sox fans: 2018! The last decade! The past!
Boston faces a tough road ahead in their final 20-plus games, with their remaining opponents having an average win percentage of .578. According to FanGraphs, the team's projected win total is 87.7. They also have a 2.7 percent chance of making the playoffs, pointing to the Red Sox likely watching from home this October.
Despite the Boston Red Sox winning most games in the American League since August 13th, they’ve only gained 1/2-game on Oakland A’s in standings and 1.5 games on New York Yankees.

If Boston does happen to make a run and clinch a playoff berth, it looks like it could be a short stay in the MLB postseason. Boston has +7000 odds to win the 2019 World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, which is the third-lowest of qualified teams. The Houston Astros (+220), Los Angeles Dodgers (+250) and Yankees (+500) have the best odds to win it all, meaning we will most likely have a new World Series champion crowned in the next few weeks.
