The long 2020 MLB offseason is almost over, but it's not done bringing bad news for Boston Red Sox fans.
With ace southpaw Chris Sale already ruled out for the season, the Sox will be down another starter to open the season. Eduardo Rodriguez has officially been placed on the 10-day injured list.
Rodriguez tested positive for COVID-19 early in July, and while he was already reportedly starting to feel better on July 7, he's clearly not progressed quickly enough.
E-Rod was coming off a promising 2019 season that saw him post a career-best 3.81 ERA across 34 games.
With Rodriguez on the shelf, it will likely be Nathan Eovaldi that claims the top spot in Boston's rotation. Eovaldi struggled to the tune of a career-worst 5.99 ERA in 2019. He did notch a career-high 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings though, and he's still just one year removed from posting a strong 3.81 ERA in 2018.
Misfortune just keeps building up for the Red Sox, and they are now +270 underdogs to make the postseason according to odds from FanDuel Sportsbook.
