Alex Verdugo has been a rock-solid contributor for the Boston Red Sox since coming over to the team in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. That deal of course lost Boston its franchise player in Mookie Betts, but it's still hard not to be impressed by what Verdugo has done during his time in Fenway.
Unfortunately, the outfielder is dealing with a back issue right now, and the organization just received some mixed news on that front.
Alex Verdugo Red Sox
According to Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo, Boston will be without its rising star in tonight's game against the Houston Astros. Verdugo has been dealing with back tightness and will get a day off, however, he should be slated back into tomorrow's starting lineup.
This certainly isn't bad news, but it's worth watching considering how good Verdugo has been this season. The 25-year-old outfielder is slashing .292/.351/.469 with 8 home runs, 26 RBIs and 11 doubles in 56 games. He doesn't take many days off, only having missed four of Boston's 61 games this season, which is why it raises eyebrows when he's not in the starting lineup.
Still, the Red Sox sit in second place in the AL East with a 37-24 overall record. Boston also owns +350 odds to win the division, according to the latest MLB odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
The hope is to have Verdugo back in the starting lineup as soon as possible.
