One of the several roster moves the Boston Red Sox made last week was designating infielder Jonathan Arauz for assignment. Apparently the 23-year-old didn't flash enough potential in 167 at-bats with the team to warrant keeping around, so he hit waivers with the chance to find a new home.
Now that possibility has become a reality, as he's been claimed by the division rival Baltimore Orioles.
It's not much of surprise to see their struggling AL East foes take a chance on a young player who's gotten some run in the majors. It's clear Arauz didn't quite meet Boston's standards, so he'll now have a chance to carve out a role on a below .500 team desperate for talent.
The Panama product initially signed with the Philadelphia Phillies at just 16 years old as an international free agent. He was traded the following December to the Houston Astros before being selected by Boston in the 2019 Rule 5 draft.
Arauz appeared in 59 games for the Red Sox since 2020, slashing .204/.280/.320 with 4 home runs and 18 RBIs. He's hitless so far across 10 at-bats in 2022.
