With the Los Angeles Rams are set to open the 2022 NFL season against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, the defending Super Bowl champions had one last piece of business to take care of.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports that the Rams have signed offensive tackle Rob Havenstein to a three-year, $34.5 million contract extension. The 30-year-old, who's serving as a captain for the first time this year, has played with the Rams for his entire career and was a big part in their championship run last season.

Havenstein's extension includes $24.1 million guaranteed, according to Rapoport's source. The deal also includes $6 million in incentives. Despite never earning any individual accolades, the former 2015 second-rounder is now one of the NFL's top-10 highest-paid right tackles.

Havenstein has been a consistent presence for Los Angeles, playing at least 15 games in five of the last six seasons and starting all 99 of his games played since debuting in 2015. He's also coming off another strong season after allowing seven sacks while taking three penalties on 957 offensive snaps last year.

With Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford dealing with an elbow-related injury, Havenstein will be counted on for his protection yet again. Hopefully, the veteran OT can live up to the expectations that his new deal brings. Otherwise, Los Angeles may have a tough time repeating as back-to-back Super Bowl champions.
