The Philadelphia Phillies' bullpen depth is being tested before Opening Day even gets underway. Sam Coonrod is expected to hit the injured list, Jose Alvarado is likely to join him, and Connor Brogdon has struggled in his first couple of appearances this spring.
To give this group a boost, Philadelphia traded for another arm on Wednesday.
The Phillies traded minor league infielder Kevin Pichardo and cash to the San Diego Padres in exchange for reliever James Norwood. Though not a blockbuster move by any stretch, it's still an addition that should help Philadelphia in the early going.
Norwood has made 28 major-league appearances since 2018 for the Padres and Chicago Cubs, recording an 0-2 career record and 3.67 ERA. The 28-year-old racked up 71 strikeouts across 44.2 innings in triple-A last year.
