The New England Patriots defense has been breaking fantasy football in 2019. They entered Week 8 with the fifth-most standard scoring fantasy points for a player at any position, sitting only behind four quarterbacks.

They are on pace for another monstrous game in Week 9, with three takeaways and a touchdown lifting them to 22 first-half fantasy points in just the first quarter against the Cleveland Browns.

Patriots Defense Fantasy Points

The Patriots defense came into Week 8 with 148 fantasy points, which is already more than all but two teams scored in 2018. With Week 8's big start, they're on pace to average 21.3 fantasy points per game, which is 9.6 points per game more than any team averaged in 2018.

This ridiculous pace is not going to be sustainable, as they've opened the season with some soft matchups and defensive touchdowns are a high-variance stat in general.

New England is off to such an incredible start, though, that even when regression hits and it starts to cool off, it's still likely to finish the season as one of the highest scoring (if not the highest scoring) fantasy football defenses we've ever seen.

If you can find someone willing to trade a top-end fantasy asset for the Patriots defense this is still a good time to sell high, as they're not likely to average 20-plus fantasy points per game again in the second half of the season. At this point, though, they are the only defense that can be considered an every-week lock in fantasy football.
