The Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver room took a hit this season when they traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins. They've since brought in the likes of Marquez Valdes-Scantling and JuJu Smith-Schuster, but it remains to be seen who'll fill in for Hill as the new WR1.

Either man could end up being the Chiefs' top wideout in 2022, however, quarterback Patrick Mahomes is actually expecting another WR to step up next season: Mecole Hardman. Mahomes told Arrowhead Pride this week that he expects "big things from [Hardman]" in the upcoming campaign.

Mahomes described Hardman as a player "who has always worked hard," but has had trouble breaking out behind Hill and tight end Travis Kelce. The 2018 NFL MVP added that he's "happy" that Hardman will have a "bigger chance" to breakout in 2022 now that Hill is gone.

"I mean, when you have two All-Pro Chiefs legends that are getting a lot of the catches, it’s hard to get everybody the targets that they want. But every time [Hardman's] in there and has his opportunity, he’s going 100 miles an hour.

Chiefs fans had high expectations for Hardman when he was drafted 56th overall in 2019. His 40-yard dash time of 4.33 seconds had the fanbase hoping that he could become somewhat of a Hill-lite type of player.

Unfortunately, Hardman hasn't taken his talents to the next level yet. He still hasn't started more than eight games or cracked the 700-yard mark in any of his three seasons. Nevertheless, his catch percentage, yards and receptions per game have increased each year, leaving time to tell if his fourth season will see him reach his potential.

With Hill's 111 receptions up for grabs in 2022, Hardman has a terrific opportunity to really step up. His potential breakout would go a long way in helping the Chiefs capitalize on their +950 odds on FanDuel Sportsbook to win Super Bowl LVII.
