As we get deeper into the NFL offseason, teams continue to hold minicamps to prepare for next month's training camp sessions. This means that free agents are starting to be offered tryouts to see if they have what it takes to make an NFL roster.
Two free agents who are getting tryouts this week are running back T.J. Yeldon and kicker Zane Gonzalez. Bother players will be trying out for the Carolina Panthers, according to Panthers reporter Joe Person.

Once a starting running back with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Yeldon has spent the last two years playing a depth role with the Buffalo Bills. Nevertheless, he has 3,453 total yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns in 60 career games. While those numbers likely won't see him having a prominent role with the Panthers if he makes the team, it shows that Yeldon could be a reliable depth option in case of any injuries in the backfield.
Meanwhile, Gonzalez has spent the last 2.5 seasons kicking for the Arizona Cardinals. Even though the Panthers already have Joey Slye as their kicker, he successfully made just 91.7% of his extra points in 2020. On the other hand, Gonzalez boasted a 97.4% in that statistical category last season. Gonzalez is also slightly more reliable when it comes to kicking fields goals, having made 82.5% of his field goals over the last two seasons compared to Slye's 79.4% during that span. There's no guarantee that Gonzalez will take Slye's job, but a strong showing in his tryout could do him wonders.
Regardless of whether or not either player's tryout is successful, the Panthers are hoping that they can help them return to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. However, the road to getting there is difficult. The Panthers are being projected to miss the 2021 playoffs at -370 odds, according to NFL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
