After months of trade rumors swirling, the MLB trade deadline comes into effect when the clock strikes 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday. The Detroit Tigers are set to miss the playoffs for the eighth consecutive season, making them one of the sellers to watch over the next few hours.
General manager Al Avila was already busy on Monday, sending Robbie Grossman to the Atlanta Braves. If Avila plans on moving another player in a last-minute deal, moving relief pitcher Michael Fulmer could help give a boost to the Tigers' prospect cupboard.
Tigers Trade Rumors
Fulmer has been with the Tigers in each of his six MLB seasons. However, ESPN's Bradford Doolittle reported back in June that the 29-year-old is one of Detroit's top trade candidates.
Contending teams are always looking to bolster their bullpen and Fulmer can help with that in spades. The starter-turned-reliever has made 41 appearances with the Tigers in 2022, going 3-4 with a 3.90 ERA, 1.246 WHIP and two saves while averaging 8.9 strikeouts per nine innings pitched.
Something that also makes Fulmer attractive to contenders is his status as a free agent when the season ends. Some teams just don't want to give up the farm for a rental reliever, which makes the Oklahoma City native one of the more affordable options out there.
MLB insider Jon Morosi reported on Saturday that the Toronto Blue Jays are one of the top suitors for Fulmer's services. Moving up north would give Fulmer his first crack at postseason success.
Losing a longtime Tiger like Fulmer would certainly hurt the fanbase. However, moving him on not only benefits his playing career, but any potential return improves Detroit's future, bringing the club one step closer to a postseason return.
