Third baseman Nolan Arenado could've been one of the hottest free agents on the market this winter. Instead, he shocked some around the league by deciding to opt into the remainder of his contract and stick with the St. Louis Cardinals.
A few days after that decision, Arenado opened up to The Athletic about his choice.
The seven-time All-Star told Katie Woo it was a "mixture" of factors that helped keep him in St. Louis. He praised his teammates, how he fits on this roster and the organization for helping him want to remain a Cardinal.
"I think it was a mixture of things. I’ve grown to love the organization, I love my teammates, coaches, trainers. I feel like I fit really well with this team and this organization. My family loves it. And the city of St. Louis, like I said, I just feel like I fit well there. I think they appreciate me and I just feel like I belong there and I love playing there."- Nolan Arenado
It's apparent that Arenado is right at home in St. Louis. After an All-Star and Gold Glove in his first season with the Cardinals, he followed that up with a potential MVP-winning performance in 2022. He finished the year with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs, proving to be one of the key cogs in his team retaking the NL Central once again.
After back-to-back early playoff exits, Arenado will hope to find better postseason success in St. Louis throughout the remainder of his contract, which now runs until 2027.
