The Seattle Mariners' trade for ace Luis Castillo left the starting pitching market at a premium. Of the contending teams, the Minnesota Twins may hold the biggest need to acquire starting pitching depth considering they rank just 19th in ERA for qualified starts.

With the trade deadline less than 48 hours away, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal shared some updates on where things stand late on Sunday night. He noted that the Twins have significant interest in arguably the top starting pitcher still available.

Twins Trade Rumors

That's none other than Oakland Athletics' ace Frankie Montas. Rosenthal also named a trio of teams the Twins must compete with for Montas, including the San Diego Padres, New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays.

Twins News

Montas has been brilliant for an Oakland team with the least wins in baseball (39-65). The 29-year-old is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career, touting a 3.18 ERA across 19 starts with 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings and just 1.0 home run per nine.

It seems inevitable that Montas will be moved before Tuesday's deadline, it's just a matter of lining up the right price for Oakland.

Sonny Gray is one of only two Twins starting pitchers hold ERAs below 4.00, leading the team with a 3.41 clip. Adding Montas would slide the seventh-year pro immediately into the top of the Twins' rotation.

For now, the Twins hold +4500 odds to win the 2022 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
