MLB Insider Names Red Sox' Single Biggest Trade Priority Ahead of Deadline
The Boston Red Sox's slow start to the 2022 MLB season has all been forgotten. A solid June performance has led to the Red Sox taking over the top wild card spot in the American League, positioning the club as potential buyers ahead of next month's trade deadline.
Injuries to Boston's pitching crew have one MLB insider listing a certain starting pitcher as the club's top deadline priority. ESPN's David Schoenfield says that Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Jose Quintana is a player that could help the Red Sox until sidelined reinforcements arrive.
Red Sox Trade Rumors
Starting pitchers Garrett Whitlock, Rich Hill and Nathan Eovaldi are all recovering on Boston's injured list. Throw in the fact that James Paxton and Chris Sale aren't ready to return just yet and it becomes easy to see why making a play for Quintana is a great idea.
Quintana has been performing well on an underwhelming Pirates team. The 33-year-old veteran is 1-4 in 15 starts this season but owns his best ERA (3.43) since his 2016 All-Star campaign. His 1.289 WHIP and 0.8 home runs allowed per nine innings are also more than respectable.
Another great thing about Quintana is that he'll be a free agent at the end of the year, meaning that the Red Sox likely won't have to trade away any of their top prospects. However, that might not be the case if there's a bidding war, making it in Boston's best interest to act sooner than later.
Red Sox World Series Odds
After the Red Sox were one of the hottest MLB teams in June, their 2022 World Series odds could use a boost. They currently sit at +3200 to win the championship this fall, which ranks 12th-best on FanDuel Sportsbook.
