As the 2022 MLB season rolls on, so do the New York Mets. The NL East leaders sit at a 50-30 record as they reach the campaign's halfway point. Even though the club is showing no signs of slowing down, there's still room for improvement ahead of the MLB trade deadline.
ESPN's David Schoenfield is listing the catcher position as the Mets' top priority as the deadline approaches. One specific backstop that the MLB insider has New York pursuing is Chicago Cubs veteran Willson Contreras.
Mets Trade Rumors
Mets catchers Tomás Nido, Patrick Mazeika and James McCann have each struggled to produce offensively at home plate this season. The trio has combined two home runs and 24 RBIs, while each player is batting .213 or worse. Needless to say, those struggles open up the door for Contreras.
The upcoming free agent has produced more with the Cubs than the Mets' above backstops combined. Contreras has already tallied 13 HRs and 35 RBIs in 71 games this year, while his .274/.392/.498 slash line is in contention for the best of his career.
Contreras is also seeing the ball well this year. His 20.7% strikeout percentage is not only below the MLB average (22.3%), but it's also better than his career average (24.1%) too. Furthermore, he's drawing a larger walk percentage (11.3%) in his plate appearances than ever before.
Contreras' heart is in Chicago, but he's set to become a free agent after the season. Rather than losing him for nothing, the Cubs want to get some kind of return on him and only time will tell if the Mets can match their ideal offer.
Mets World Series Odds
The Mets are already among the 2022 World Series betting favorites and adding Contreras can help cement that fact. FanDuel Sportsbook has the Mets available at +700 (No. 4) to win this fall's championship.
