The Pittsburgh Steelers made headlines in Week 4 after starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky was pulled in the second half in favor of rookie Kenny Pickett. Many assumed Trubisky earned a spot on the sideline after underperforming to begin the 2022 campaign.
However, it turns out the veteran was benched for an unexpected reason.
Trubisky was pulled because of a locker room confrontation with wide receiver Diontae Johnson, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Dulac's sources claim Johnson "began yelling at Trubisky to throw him the ball more," Then the QB "stood up to Johnson and a heated exchange occurred." That incident then led head coach Mike Tomlin to pull Trubisky for Pickett.
This is a shocking revelation, if true. It was abundantly clear tensions were starting to rise due to Trubisky's play, but it's surprising to hear Johnson confronted Trubisky and the two then exchanged words. The latter was praised for his leadership in the offseason and even earned captains honors as a result.
Trubisky failed to impress in his 3.5 starts, recording a meager 653 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. However, he stepped up in a huge way this past Sunday after Pickett was sidelined with a concussion, throwing for 144 yards and 1 TD to defeat a tough Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense.
Pickett's injury now creates an intriguing scenario where Trubisky could take over as QB1 once again. Hopefully he and Johnson are able to path things up between them in order to help this team win.
