Throughout training camp, there's been an interesting position battle on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster. Surprisingly, it's not for a coveted starting role, but rather the backup quarterback. Pittsburgh still holds four quarterbacks on the active roster and fans are eager to find out the order that lines up behind obvious starter Ben Roethlisberger.

Heading into Pittsburgh's preseason finale on Friday night, the quarterback depth chart remains as unclear as it has been all camp. When asked for some clarity, head coach Mike Tomlin did his best act of avoiding a clear-cut answer altogether.

Steelers Backup QB

Here's what we do know. Roethlisberger is the obvious starter, but at age 39, the Steelers could end up in an injury situation forcing their backup into action. Before this year, Mason Rudolph was the obvious number two option with Joshua Dobbs slotted as QB3. However, the Steelers added former first-round draft pick Dwayne Haskins this offseason and he's been complicating the depth chart with some stellar preseason play.

Tomlin plans to have backups Haskins and Dobbs as the two quarterbacks in action for the preseason finale. With this final preseason game acting as last-ditch showcase for backups around most NFL rosters, one might assume that Rudolph will remain the No. 2 option behind Big Ben.

But, Tomlin's recent quotes don't offer any clarity around that, whatsoever.

“ [People] can assume whatever it is you want, but it may be wrong. So, I like the fact that we have four NFL quarterbacks in this camp. It’s a good position to be in. Those guys are deserving of how this plays out and I imagine if there’s a guy on the outside looking in at the end of this, he’s still going to find work in this league.”

It's not the clear-cut answer that Steelers fans were hopeful of, but it's right on point with Tomlin's narrative throughout camp. We'll know more about the final QB depth chart when the final round of training cuts are released next Tuesday.
