Mike Tomlin Clears Up Steelers' Backup QB Situation With Latest Comments

After the Pittsburgh Steelers switched starting quarterbacks during the 2022 season, Kenny Pickett heads into 2023 as their unquestioned QB1. Their backup situation isn't as obvious, however, with Mitch Trubisky's contract making him a potential cap casualty.
Head coach Mike Tomlin cleared up the looming questions around QB2 duties with his latest comments.
Mike Tomlin did not say what he plans to do about finding a third QB but said Mitch Trubisky will return as the backup to Kenny Pickett. Trubisky is scheduled to earn $8 million in salary and count $10.6 million against the cap, making him one of the league’s highest-paid backups

Tomlin told reporters at the league's annual Owners Meetings that Trubisky is returning to Pittsburgh to serve behind Pickett. The HC didn't have any updates on the QB3 role, but that can easily be solved through the draft or free agency.
This at least rules out a major shakeup to the Steelers' QB depth chart. Some thought Trubisky could be cut given that he's slated to carry a $10.6 million cap hit in 2023, yet the team is planning to run it back with the veteran holding Pickett's clipboard.
The 2022 campaign did not go as planned at all for Trubisky, who lost his starting job and was embroiled in some locker room drama. He ended the year with a 2-3 record in starts while recording 1,252 passing yards, 4 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.
Keeping Trubisky around prevents Tomlin and company from having to start over with a new backup, which is a benefit. His starting experience also outweighs the other options available after the initial wave of free agency, so it makes perfect sense for Pittsburgh to retain him.
