Both the New York Mets and New York Yankees are heading into crucial offseasons. After a pair of stellar regular seasons, the teams from Queens and The Bronx both fell short in the playoffs.

Now as they prepare to reload, they are also facing an investigation from Major League Baseball, following a report from Andy Martino of SNY that Hal Steinbrenner and Steve Cohen (the owners of the Yankees and Mets), had an understanding as to not go after each other's highly-touted free agents (Aaron Judge and presumably Jacob deGrom on the Mets side).

While the article makes no suggestion of formal collusion and merely suggests it's a sign of mutual unspoken respect between the teams as a way to keep the peace in a relationship that was constantly strained during George Steinbrenner's reign.

Martino states in the article:

[Cohen and Steinbrenner] Enjoy a mutually respectful relationship, and do not expect to upend that with a high-profile bidding war.

Nevertheless, the MLB Players Association thought this was enough to request an investigation, as any formal agreement resulting in two teams agreeing not to bid on or pay a specific player would qualify as collusion under the MLB's collective bargaining agreement.

It sounds like this could be something that toes the line but isn't actual collusion. Regardless, the MLB could have the right to investigate any communications the two owners have had and if something nefarious is found, punishments will be dolled out, most likely in monetary form, as past precedent has set.
