Matthew Bergeron Scouting Report
Bergeron committed to Syracuse as the No. 2 overall prospect in Canada and appeared in all 12 games as a freshman in 2019. He followed a solid start to his collegiate career by allowing only 4 sacks and 0 quarterback hits across 11 games played in 2020.
Bergeron took things to a different level in his last two seasons, though. The Quebec native gave up 1 sack and 1 QB hit during the 2021 season, earning honorable mention All-ACC honors as Syracuse averaged over 4.0 yards per carry when running to the left side. He finished his college career by allowing 5 sacks and 4 QB hits across 11 games last season as a team captain.
Highlighted strengths of Bergeron's game focus on his body control. His mobility sticks out on game film from both the left and right tackle positions, as does his ability to redirect his footwork. The Syracuse standout has been praised for his timing when it comes to run-blocking schemes as well.
Bergeron is not a prospect without flaws, though, as he seems to rely more on his technique and angling than he does his physical strength. That could be a problem when facing massive defensive linemen. Nevertheless, Bergeron has the range to make a notable impact in a rush-heavy offense.
Matthew Bergeron NFL Draft Prediction
As noted above, Bergeron would best fit on an offense that prioritizes the rushing attack. He is capable of getting to the second level and paving the way for a ball carrier down the field. His tendency to get beat on the edge means a switch to the guard position may be coming eventually.
Bergeron has the upside of a second-round pick and the New England Patriots line up as a logical landing spot. Head coach Bill Belichick's team has posted a top-10 rushing play percentage in two of the last three years and has current left tackle Trent Brown under contract for just one more season.
The Patriots have been known as a team that focuses on building a roster through the trenches, and adding players that can open holes for running back Rhamondre Stevenson is never a bad concept. Mock drafts suggest Bergeron will be available when the Patriots are up in the second round, too.
Prediction: New England Patriots (Round 2, 46th overall)
