Former Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule quickly found a new job after being ousted by the Panthers earlier this season. Rhule is heading back to the college ranks where he will be the next head coach for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Rhule's reign in Carolina wasn't great from the start and things never really improved. While most Panthers fans would tell you much of the team's misfortunes over the last couple years were mainly Rhule's fault, the franchise certainly didn't do him any favors with the roster he was provided either.
Matt Rhule Comments
Rhule spoke about what he would do differently in his time in Carolina on The Season With Peter Schrager and he had a pretty bold response. Rhule said he "Probably would have taken a different job."
Rhule goes on to discuss how he ultimately wasn't a fit in Carolina and that he was misled by the organizational direction when he was hired. He claimed the Panthers sold him on a four-to-five-year plan originally, but that narrative was quickly changed during his tenure. Rhule was also seriously considered for the New York Giants job at the time, one that many people were surprised he didn't take since he was raised in New York City,
Rhule doesn't seem to hold any bad blood with the organization and he seems genuine in his response, so it was probably best for both parties to split up. Now Rhule can bring his focus to leading another college program, where he has had plenty of success before.
Nebraska holds a rich and impressive history as a program and one that needs to get back on track again. Rhule did just that at Baylor before leaving for the NFL. If he can do it again for the Cornhuskers, any failures he had in the NFL will be long forgotten.
