The Seattle Mariners are playing below their preseason expectations so far in 2022. Seattle currently owns a 28-35 record and sits six games back of the Wild Card, so they could use some help to make a push this summer.

In order to add some depth, the Mariners claimed Drew Ellis off of waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.

Drew Ellis MLB

Ellis was designated for assignment on June 12 to open up a roster spot for Arizona, giving Seattle the chance to take a shot on the 26-year-old.

The University of Louisville product was highly touted coming out of college, going to the D-Backs in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft. He made his debut in 2021, appearing in 28 games for Arizona while slashing .130/.277/203 along with 1 home run and 5 RBIs.

Ellis is primarily a third baseman, but he also has played 1B and left field in the minors. Perhaps a fresh start will help the former top prospect find his form once again.
