The Detroit Lions will head into the 2021 NFL season under a new regime. First-year head coach Dan Campbell brought in recent Los Angeles Chargers HC Anthony Lynn as the team's new offensive coordinator in hopes of giving that side of the ball a boost.
Detroit poached running back Jamaal Williams from the Green Bay Packers this offseason, and Lynn plans to feature him heavily this season.
Lions News: Jamaal Williams
Lynn believes Williams is the type of back that excels running between the tackles and in blocking. The OC envisions incumbent D'Andre Swift as more of a speedy complement to Williams, though he said the latter has the potential to play all three downs. Lynn's comments are surprising given Swift outproduced Williams last year on numbers alone.
Swift rushed for 521 yards and 8 TDs on 114 carries as a rookie, adding 46 receptions for 357 yards and 2 TDs as a receiver.
Williams had similar usage for the Packers in 2020. He turned 119 rushes into 505 yards and 2 TDs while adding 31 receptions for 236 yards and a score through the air.
It would've made sense to up Swift's role coming off of an impressive rookie season and with Adrian Peterson gone, but it appears the second-year RB will have to earn his touches over Williams in 2021.
