Latest Salvador Perez Injury Update is a Relief for Royals Fans

Catcher Salvador Perez has been a mainstay in the Kansas City Royals lineup over the last decade of play. Fans had a reason to be concerned when he was placed on the 10-day injured list with a hand issue, but manager Mike Matheny says things are "trending in the right direction" in his recovery.

Perez was able to put in some work in the batting cage on Tuesday, which is a one step closer to getting back on the diamond. The seven-time All-Star was originally placed on the IL after suffering a sprained left thumb and was told it would be at least two weeks before he could suit up again.

What made this injury especially concerning at first was the fact that it is on Perez's catching hand. His thumb is obviously going to be stressed with every pitch, so any ramping up in his workouts is good news. The Royals will keep relying on rookie MJ Melendez to man behind the plate.

Perez was off to an unusually slow start to the plate in 2022, posting a slash line of .206/.239/.397 across 34 games played. He does still lead the team with 6 home runs, though. Of course, this comes after he led the league with 48 home runs and 121 RBI last year in what was a Silver Slugger effort.

The Royals remain tied for last place in the American League Central with a 14-26 record and are a long shot to win the World Series with odds set at +30000, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
