Baltimore Ravens fans grow more impatient with each passing day that franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson isn't signed to a long-term extension. The last thing the 25-year-old wants is for contract discussions to be a distraction as the 2022 NFL season approaches, leading to his giving the Ravens a deadline to get a deal done.

Jackson told reporters on Saturday that won't negotiate a new contract once the regular season begins. He added that he'd like to be extended before Week 1, meaning the Ravens have less than a month to work something out.

Lamar Jackson Contract

ESPN's Dan Graziano reported in July 2021 that Jackson was looking for anywhere between $40-$45 million annually. Considering that fellow 2018 first-round QB Josh Allen signed a six-year, $258 million contract with the Buffalo Bills last year ($43 million annual average), it's easy to see why Jackson would hope for something similar.

The Ravens' gunslinger has proven to be one of the NFL's best dual-threats under center since becoming a full-time starter in 2019. He's started in 42 games since then, throwing for 8,766 passing yards and 78 touchdowns to 28 interceptions while also rushing 468 times for 2,978 yards and another 16 TDs on the ground.

With this season being the final one of Jackson's rookie deal, the Ravens need to work something out sooner than later. Even if negotiations stop during the regular season, it's still going to be a distraction as fans and the media alike will constantly question what's going on.

At the end of the day, Jackson is a franchise cornerstone in Baltimore and the last thing the Ravens need is to lose him. He's only ever had great things to say about the city and franchise, which likely improves his chances of staying.

Still, it's a frustrating experience for fans, management and quarterback alike.
