Rich Strike became the second-biggest upset in history to win the Kentucky Derby at the 148th Run for the Roses this past Saturday. While most winners of the Derby would immediately begin on prepping for the Preakness Stakes and the next step toward the elusive Triple Crown, owners of the Derby winner announced on Thursday that the horse will pass up that shot and instead take time to train for the Belmont Stakes on June 11.

Most horses that have a shot at winning the Triple Crown struggle at Belmont. It is the longest of the three races and it's rare to find a horse that can beat out the entire field of the best in the world on the longer track in such a short time. That's especially true when some of the other horses in the Derby that don't win take this same approach so are more well rested.

The Belmont is still a prestigious race and considered by most to be the most difficult, but it also still carries a huge purse.

Rich Strike's owners said they would never enter him in a race they didn't think he could win, so maybe after the surprising win, and a quick turnaround, there is some element of worry he wouldn't have the stamina.

Either way, attendees of the Preakness Stakes hoping to catch the Derby winner try and continue history and attendees of the Belmont Stakes hoping to witness a Triple Crown will not be getting that this year.
