The Philadelphia Eagles's high-flying offense has an incredibly tough test when they face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6. The Eagles' offensive line must protect quarterback Jalen Hurts from the Cowboys' relentless attack, which is why the latest Jordan Mailata injury update is so critical.
The veteran offensive tackle — who sustained a shoulder injury in Week 4 — made his return to practice on Thursday. Mailata has been an anchor for Philadelphia over the last three years, so potentially getting him back up front would be a huge boon, to say the least.
Jordan Mailata Injury Update
The positive news comes just a week after doctors considered Mailata's status to be "day-to-"day." He wasn't able to get healthy enough to face the Arizona Cardinals last week, so the fact that he's back on the field running drills bodes well for his Week 6 status.
Mailata performed well this year before going down. He's played 226 offensive snaps over four games, giving up only 1 sack while taking three penalties. Last year, he allowed just 3 sacks on 914 snaps, highlighting his importance to the Eagles in the long run.
Even with a healthy Mailata, facing the Cowboys' defense won't be easy. Dallas has racked up the second-most sacks (20) in the league this season, led by relentless forces like Micah Parsons, Dorance Armstrong Jr. and DeMarcus Lawrence.
Though the Eagles have only given up 11 sacks (T-No. 15), Hurts could use better protection. He's seeing less time in the pocket now (2.3 seconds) compared to last year (2.7 seconds) and has already been hit 16 times after only taking 32 hits in 15 games last season.
Philadelphia can certainly win without Mailata, as proven by its 5-0 record. That said, his presence would certainly make things a little easier against Dallas on Sunday.
Cowboys vs Eagles Odds
Mailata's status might be up in the air, but that isn't stopping oddsmakers from liking his team's chances of victory this weekend. FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds currently list the Eagles as 6.5-point favorites over the Cowboys in a game where the projected total sits at 42.5 points.
