The San Francisco 49ers have had an entire offseason to trade quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but no deal has come to fruition. With Week 1 of the regular season arriving soon, time is running out. General manager John Lynch was quick to point out one destination still remains off the table today.
Jimmy Garoppolo Trade Rumors
Lynch said that he would prefer not to face Garoppolo when the 49ers host the Seahawks in Week 2. Seattle has long been a rumored landing spot for Jimmy G considering the lack of depth on its roster at the QB position. Seeing a divisional rival being ruled out as an option isn't too shocking, though.
Of course, the possibility Garoppolo ends up playing for head coach Pete Carroll is still present if the 49ers opt to cut the veteran QB before Tuesday's 53-man roster deadline. The move would save San Francisco $25.5 million in cap space and give Jimmy G the choice of which team he calls home next.
If the 49ers continue a patient approach and opt to keep Garoppolo on the team, trade opportunities could arise. All it might take would be one QB injury or disappointing losing streak for a contending team to come calling. Whether or not that's a risk San Francisco is willing to take is yet to be seen.
For now, the 49ers will move forward with second-year pro Trey Lance leading an offense filled with talented playmakers. San Francisco kicks off the season against the Chicago Bears and are slated as a 6.5-point road favorite with odds set at -295 on the moneyline, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
