The Seattle Seahawks and star safety Jamal Adams can't catch a break. The Seattle Times' Adam Jude reports that Adams broke his middle finger during the Seahawks' first day of training camp on Wednesday. The injury occurred when his finger got caught on a teammate during a no-contact drill.
While he's expected to be back before the 2022 NFL season begins, this isn't the news that fans wanted to hear. Adams hasn't played meaningful football since tearing his labrum during Week 13 of last season, so there's no telling what kind of shape he'll be in when the new campaign begins.
Jamal Adams Injury Update
Adams described the injury as a "freak accident," adding to the list of finger-related issues he's dealt with. A surgeon fused the bones in his left middle and ring fingers together back in June, hoping that it would finally put the issue behind him.
Jude also repots that the goal is for Adams "to be back on the field in early August." The Seahawks' first preseason game isn't until Thursday, Aug. 13 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. If he can feel well enough by then, chances are that Adams can suit up with the help of some hand protection.
Adams hopes to bounce back after last season's disappointing performance. While he was far from bad, it was the first time since he was a rookie that he didn't make the Pro Bowl, nor was he on either All-Pro team. Nevertheless, he finished the year with 87 tackles, five defended passes and a pair of interceptions in 12 games.
The Seahawks' pass defense was downright abysmal last year, surrendering 265.5 passing yards per game (No. 31). If Adams is forced to miss any significant amount of time, that number could be much worse to begin the 2022 season.
Seahawks Playoff Odds
The Seahawks are far from Super Bowl contenders, meaning the only thing they should be worried about is making the postseason. Even with a fully healthy Adams, that's a long shot. The Seahawks are favored to miss the 2022-23 NFL playoffs at -750 odds, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
