It's hard not to think about five-time Pro Bowl safety Harrison Smith when it comes to the Minnesota Vikings. The 32-year-old veteran has spent his entire career with the Vikings since being selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Through nine seasons, Smith has suited up in 130 games while recording 747 total tackles, 66 passes defended, 28 interceptions and 7 forced fumbles.

However, Smith is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the 2021 NFL season, leaving some to wonder whether his career will continue in Minnesota. The veteran safety opened up about a possible contract extension with The Star-Tribune over the weekend and said that he'd look and "see what we can do" about staying with the Vikings.

Smith is slated to have a cap hit of $10.23 million in 2021.

Even though Smith hasn't had any concrete extension discussions, he did add that he'd "love to be here [Minnesota] in the future." Hearing that should give Vikings fans some form of optimism for the time being. After all, Smith has proven his loyalty to the organization and fans by spending nearly a decade in Minnesota.

A one-time All-Pro player, Smith was a part of a Vikings' defense that allowed a disappointing 29.7 points (29th) and 393.2 total yards (27th) last season. That led to Minnesota finishing the campaign with a 7-9 record, missing the playoffs for the fifth time in eight years.

As for Smith, he finished the 2020 NFL season with 89 total tackles, 10 passes defended and 5 interceptions — proving that he can still contribute at this stage of his career. Even though that performance wasn't good enough to get him into the Pro Bowl for the sixth straight year, it's safe to say that the Vikings' defense would've been in even worse shape had it not been for Smith.

Regardless of whether or not Smith signs an extension ahead of the new season, the Vikings have a tough road ahead of them. FanDuel Sportsbook is projecting Minnesota to be a bubble team in 2021, giving the organization +128 odds to make the playoffs. If they can make the playoff bracket, the Vikings have +4000 odds to win Super Bowl 56 (18th).
