The Cleveland Guardians are on fire, winning seven of their last eight games and overtaking the AL Central lead by 2.5 games. The Guardians are going to do what they can down the stretch to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2020, including making a few notable roster moves on Monday.

Cleveland first announced that journeyman pitcher Jake Jewell has been designated for assignment, while fellow hurler Peyton Battenfield was sent to Triple-A. As a result, the club is calling up top pitching prospect Xzavion Curry — a seventh-round pick from the 2019 MLB Draft.

Guardians Roster News

Guardians fans are excited to see what Curry can do in the Majors. The 24-year-old has split the 2022 campaign between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus, going 8-4 with a 3.83 ERA and 1.089 WHIP, issuing 30 walks while striking out 113 batters over 101 innings.

Curry gets the nod in the second game of Cleveland's doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

Meanwhile, Jewell's demotion was hardly a surprise given that his MLB career hasn't been anything special. He made 31 relief appearances with the Los Angeles Angels and Chicago Cubs from 2019 to 2021, pitching to a 7.75 ERA and 1.617 WHIP while striking out 10 batters in just as many innings.

Nevertheless, Jewell still has a chance to find success this year. Despite his MLB struggles, he's still 2-2 with a 2.49 ERA in 36 relief appearances in Triple-A this year. With pitching-related injuries piling up around the league as the postseason nears, an extra arm is something that many teams could use.

Currently, the Guardians hold +5000 odds to win the 2022 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
