The Tampa Bay Buccaneers boast one of the best offenses in the NFL, and while much of that comes from Tom Brady and the passing game, it does make the backfield an incredibly favorable one for fantasy football value.
Ronald Jones and Leonard Fournette are getting much of the buzz in the group, but newcomer Giovani Bernard could be the one to actually carve out a distinct role for himself.
Gio Bernard Fantasy Football Value
In the Bucs' preseason opener, Bernard was the clear No. 1 third-down back when Brady and the first-team offense was on the field. Anyone who had James White on their fantasy teams in 2018 or 2019 knows how valuable that role can be.
Brady's downfield targets will obviously continue to go to Chris Godwin, Mike Evans and Rob Gronkowski, but easy catches out of the backfield will go a long way to making Bernard a valuable producer in PPR fantasy football leagues.
Bernard has proven himself more than capable of feasting as a receiver, too. Since he came into the NFL in 2013, only two backs (Le'Veon Bell and James White) have recorded more receptions than Gio's 342.
The Bucs also checked in at No. 10 in the NFL in pass play percentage (61.8%) last year, meaning that being the primary receiving back won't necessarily limit Bernard to just playing on third downs.
Bernard didn't show up on The Duel's initial 2021 PPR fantasy football rankings, but the sleeper upside this role brings makes him worth a look in the late rounds of your fantasy football draft.
