The 2020 NCAA college football campaign was another success as the Georgia Bulldogs went 8-2, culminating with a 24-21 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Peach Bowl. Now, the Bulldogs will look to continue that success into the 2021 campaign, however, they're not without their doubters.
FanDuel Sportsbook is projecting Georgia to miss the 2021 college football playoff at -210 odds. Even if Georgia hasn't qualified for the tournament since 2017-18, this doesn't change the fact that these odds are nothing short of disrespectful — especially when considering the school's recent success.
Georgia Bulldogs Playoff Odds
If the Bulldogs want to convince the voting committee that they deserve to be a part of the tournament, they're going to need a strong showing early on in the season. They're expected to be one of the top teams again in the SEC, second only to the Alabama Crimson Tide. The two teams will not be meeting this season, so it's up to Georgia to play its best football possible in hopes to receive college football playoff votes.
Head coach Kirby Smart will be back for his sixth season with the Bulldogs. Georgia averaged 32.3 points per game (34th) under Smart last season, which is impressive, however, it was the defense that took a dip compared to the previous year. After allowing a league-best 12.2 points per game in 2019, Georgia allowed 20.0 last year (18th). Considering how the Bulldogs lost key defensive players in the 2021 NFL Draft, it'll be up to Smart to make sure the team remains on the right path.
Even if Georgia's odds to qualify for the college football playoff are disrespectful, the school is projected to be one of the best teams in the NCAA. FanDuel Sportsbook has listed the Bulldogs' national championship odds at +500, which are the third-best in all of college football.
