San Francisco Giants fans came to love Joe Panik over the last decade as he played a part in what was one of the greatest infield combinations in the major leagues. The 31-year-old helped the team win the World Series back in 2014 and has now announced he is retiring from the sport of baseball.

Panik combined with shortstop Brandon Crawford and first baseman Brandon Belt for a number of dazzling plays. There's one that sticks out to most Giants fans, though. Panik fielded a grounder during Game 7 of the 2014 World Series and glove-flipped the ball to Crawford to start a crucial double play.

San Francisco shocked some people by selecting Panik with the No. 29 pick in the 2011 MLB Draft. It wasn't long before he proved why the move was made as he came up in 2014 and posted a .305 batting average across the final 73 games. He also finished sixth in the NL Rookie of the Year voting.

Panik was able to replicate that success in 2015, slashing .312/.378/.455 and making his lone All-Star appearance. He then earned a Gold Glove in 2016 for his work in the field and smacked a career-high 10 home runs. Injuries eventually caught up to Panik as he was designated for assignment in 2019.

The last two and half seasons of Panik's career was split between the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays and Miami Marlins. Overall, his career may be best described by the fact that he posted the sixth-lowest strikeout rate among hitters that debuted since 2014. Panik simply got the job done.
