The Boston Red Sox have largely had an offseason to forget. This mainly stems from the departure, and failures leading up, of shortstop Xander Bogaerts. The club did ink a nice extension Rafael Devers but the Bogaerts' situation was not Boston's only frustrating outcome this Winter.

On Monday, a report revealed the Red Sox were turned down by an elite bullpen arm. Making matters worse, this arm turned down a better contract offer from the Red Sox to sign with the New York Yankees.

MLB insider Christ Kirschner of The Athletic revealed newly re-acquired Yankees pitcher Tommy Kahnley "nearly" signed with Boston. The club reportedly offers Kahnle his "biggest contract" in free agency, but he opted to return to New York instead.

It's not exactly clear what offer the Red Sox sent Kahlne's way, but he accepted a lesser deal worth two years and $11.5 million with the Yankees.

Boston fans can feel good about the front office's approach in this situation, but Kahlne's turning down may be related to the uncertain state of the franchise right now. Boston just finished a full 21 games back in the AL East race and has more questions than answers on the roster moving forward.
