The NFL world is mourning the loss of coaching great Brian Schottenheimer following his passing at age 77. Schottenheimer influenced many NFL greats during his 21 years as a head coach, including current New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Following news of Schottenheimer's passing, Brees posted a heartfelt tribute to his former head coach.

Schottenheimer was Brees' head coach from 2002-2005 when stepped into his first-ever starting role in the NFL. They made the playoffs together in 2004 when the team went 12-4 and finished first in the AFC West, earning Schottenheimer the NFL's Coach of the Year award.

"The lessons and wisdom of Marty Schottenheimer will forever ring in my ears,” Brees wrote on his Instagram page. “He loved his players and he loved his family. I am so grateful and honored to have played for him. Rest In Peace Coach Marty!”

Schottenheimer has the eighth-most wins in NFL head coaching history, going 200-126-1 with the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Football Team and Chargers. He also played six seasons in the AFL, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 1965.

Many, like Brees, offered glowing reflections on Schottenheimer, showing the enormous impact he had across the league.
