Doug Marrone Takes Big Demotion to Coach With Nick Saban at Alabama
By Larry Rupp

Doug Marrone was one of seven head coaches fired this year after he was dismissed by the Jacksonville Jaguars following a 1-15 season. Instead of staying in the NFL to some capacity, Marrone is heading to the University of Alabama to become the team's offensive line coach.
Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban has created a precedent for hiring former NFL coaches. In fact, Marrone isn't even Alabama's first hire from the NFL this offseason as former Houston Texans' Head Coach Bill O'Brien is set to become the team's offensive coordinator.

Marrone spent the last four seasons coaching the Jaguars and now takes a major step down in power. It's not often you see an NFL head coach take a college assistant coaching position only a few weeks after he was fired. Nevertheless, Marrone is set to bring a lot of experience and knowledge to this position.
While the Jaguars are starting fresh with new Head Coach Urban Meyer, Marrone is getting back to his roots. He started out his coaching career as an offensive line coach at multiple colleges before coaching the same position for the New York Jets as well as the New Orleans Saints.
A number of coaches have turned their career around under Saban and gone on to take head coaching positions elsewhere. It's likely that Marrone is hoping to have the same result.
