The Pittsburgh Steelers' Mitchell Trubisky experiment hasn't gone as planned. The veteran quarterback's struggles reached a breaking point in Sunday's 24-20 loss to the New York Jets, causing him to be replaced by rookie Kenny Pickett at the start of the second half.

Steelers fans immediately warmed up to Pickett, who showed flashes of promise in his NFL debut. In fact, his performance was solid enough that wide receiver Diontae Johnson has subtly endorsed the first-year gunslinger for the team's starting QB job.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB

According to ESPN's Brooke Pryor, Johnson described Pickett as having some "swag" in his debut. The talented wideout added that the rookie QB is already respected by everyone and that he does a great job at getting everyone to listen during the huddle — all great qualities to have in a leader.

Pickett made history by becoming the first quarterback ever to rush for 2 touchdowns in his NFL debut. The former Pittsburgh Panther also completed 10-of-13 passes for 120 yards, although all three of his misses ended up as interceptions.

Steelers fans would love to see Pickett start in Week 5, but that's far from a guarantee. It was reported last month that head coach Mike Tomlin wanted to sit the 24-year-old all season, but maybe those plans have changed after how disastrous the Trubisky era has been.

If Pittsburgh does roll with Pickett again, he's fortunate enough to have weapons like Johnson, Najee Harris and Pat Freiermuth to help him with his NFL transition. He probably won't lead the team to a Super Bowl this year, but playing with talented playmakers would help Pickett become even more prepared for the lead role once the 2023 season hits.

Then again, the Steelers have a tough matchup this week against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Buffalo's stout defense isn't exactly rookie QB-friendly, so perhaps Tomlin will give Trubisky one more try before throwing his first-year signal-caller into the flames.

Steelers vs Bills Odds

To make matters worse, the Steelers' matchup against the Bills takes place on the road. As a result, FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds list Buffalo as a whopping 14-point favorite over Pittsburgh.
