The 2021 NFL Draft is projected to have five quarterbacks taken early in the first round. But after the initial run on quarterbacks, Stanford's Davis Mills becomes an intriguing option. The former highly-touted recruit started just 11 games and played in 14 in his college career.

But here are three teams with quarterback needs who may be willing to draft Mills and groom him into a potential future starter.

Davis Mills Draft Projection

3. New England Patriots

The New England Patriots need a long-term solution at quarterback, and they could take a chance on Davis Mills similar to when they drafted Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round in 2014. Davis displays the ability to make quick decisions. ProFootballFocus rates Mills' 2.39-second average time to throw on non-screens, RPOs and play-action passes as the fourth-fastest in the nation in 2020. He could learn behind Cam Newton, and New England would give him a good look late in the third round at No. 96. A second-round pick at No. 46 may be a stretch with the organization's other positional needs. But if New England’s coaches feel confident in their ability to build on his foundation and make him a more consistent, pro-ready player, he might be a target earlier than expected on Day 2 of the draft.

2. Chicago Bears

Injuries were an issue for Mills, even before he came to Stanford. Medical evaluations will be crucial for him as teams determine the risk. The Chicago Bears have two QBs in their early 30's, but no third quarterback on the roster. Mills is a pocket passer who could learn behind two similar quarterbacks. Mills had an impressive pro day, and scouts and analysts have him moving up the draft board. The Bears have the No. 83 overall pick, and Mills might get serious consideration if he's available for the Bears at that point.

1. Washington Football Team

The Washington Football Team has two third-round picks at No. 74 and 82. That also gives them options if they like Mills enough to take him in the second round at No. 51. Mills has ideal size for a quarterback as a 6-foot 4, 225-pound passer. His arm strength traits are solid, and he showed his skills and talent in his final college game passing for 428 yards and 3 touchdowns. Mills is the type of talent teams can bet on, and he can learn from newly-signed, stop-gap QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.
