David Ortiz Weighs in on Rafael Devers Extension

The Boston Red Sox front office is currently focused on doing whatever it can to help the team reach the 2022 MLB Playoffs. That doesn't mean the idea of a Rafael Devers contract extension has gone out the window, though. David Ortiz recently weighed in on what he thinks about the third baseman's situation.

High praise from @davidortiz about Rafael Devers:

“Devers might be one of the top three pure hitters in the game right now. Not might, I’m 100 percent sure because I watch that kid hitting and playing the game so many times that when I watch him I’m expecting something.”

Ortiz took time during a Hall of Fame Zoom meeting to call Devers "one of the top three pure hitters in the game right now." That is not something to be taken lightly. After all, Ortiz knows a thing or two about being a reliable hitter considering he earned seven Silver Sluggers award in his storied career.
The Red Sox legend also put things into perspective with a very simple statement, "we gotta keep Devers." Devers is eligible for arbitration for one more season before entering unrestricted free agency. Locking down the 25-year-old with an extension would ensure Boston keeps its star.
One year after earning the first Silver Slugger award of his career, Devers continues to excel. He was just named to his second straight All-Star game and currently leads the league in hits (108). Overall, Devers is slashing .325/.381/.587 with 59 runs scored, 28 doubles, 19 home runs and 51 RBI.
For now, Boston will look to enter the All-Star break with positive momentum and start a three-game weekend series against the divisional rival New York Yankees on Friday night. The Red Sox have odds set at +2800 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
