The days leading up to the annual Winter Meetings are usually an exciting time for baseball fans. It's usually a time the MLB Hot Stove is piping hot and flush with various rumors and speculation about offseason transactions.
Unfortunately, that's not the case for the Boston Red Sox. Boston is dealing with the disappointing reality that the front office completely mishandled Xander Bogaerts and his free agency negotiations.
On Friday, longtime Red Sox legend David Ortiz shared an update on the negotiations. But this update comes off as completely naive and misinformed.
According to Ortiz, "I expect them to come through and get this done. We don't want another situation like Mookie [Betts]. A guy like that, such a good player who goes about everything like a professional in a place like Boston, he's a keeper."
He sounds like a desperate fan, rather than an insider with any real information about Boston's current situation.
Boston had every opportunity to keep Bogaerts in town. The team had nearly an month of exclusive negotiating between the end of the regular season and the end of the World Series, but failed to get the job done. Now, Bogaerts' salary is on the rise and reportedly will be tens of millions more than Boston initially offered the All-Star shortstop.
It's yet another example of Chaim Bloom and the front office completely mishandling homegrown talent. One thing Ortiz is right about, just look back at what happened with Mookie Betts.
