The Green Bay Packers missed out on the playoffs after a disappoting season. They started out slow and could never full recover despite winning four of their last five games. Outside of Aaron Rodgers, left tackle David Bakhtiari could be the most important player on the Packers roster.
He has dealt with some serious injuries the last couple years, most notably a torn ACL that limited him to just one game in 2021. As a result, retirement has been speculated as a possibility for the All-Pro left tackle. He quickly put those rumors to bed.
David Bahktiari Retirement Plans
Bakhtiari made it clear he wants to be back next season and isn;t think about retirment at all. He said his knee feels good and has no more surgeries scheduled for it.
The Packers do have a potential out on Bakhtiari's contract this offseason, he would only carry an $11 million dead cap hit next season if the Packers were to designate him as a post-June 1 release, or trade him. That would save them over $17.5 million in 2023 cap space. If he remains on the roster with his current contract, Bakhtiari would carry a huge $29 million cap hit in 2023.
Of course, the two sides could always agree to a new restructured contract, which could change things. But Bakhtiari, when healthy, still remains one of the best left tackles in the league and remains a close friend of Rodgers. If Rodgers is indeed back in Green Bay next season, you can imagine Bakhtiari will be too.
