Dave Ziegler Reveals Initial Thoughts on Derek Carr Extension

The Las Vegas Raiders head into the offseason looking to build around new GM Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels. One of the main storylines of the 2022 season is going to be their relationship with quarterback Derek Carr as he enters the last year of his current contract.

Ziegler explained during his latest press conference that he and McDaniels are going to take a wait-and-see approach when it comes to a possible extension for the eight-year starter. He stressed the importance of seeing how everything fits together and learning how Carr plays out on the field.

"I think that’s going to be step one, building a relationship, understanding what Derek does well. Derek understanding what Josh and the offensive staff is trying to build."

It's a change of pace from McDaniels' press conference, in which he reiterated his confidence that this team can win football games with Carr leading the way. Keep in mind that McDaniels is the sixth HC Carr will play for since being selected by Las Vegas in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

There's a lot to be happy with regarding Carr right now. He just led a mixed up Raiders' roster to the franchise's first playoff berth since 2016 and finished fifth in the NFL in passing yards (4,804). The 30-year-old signal-caller also led three fourth quarter comebacks and six game-winning drives in 2021.

There's no doubt that Ziegler will have some tough decisions to make before Week 1 kickoff comes around in September. However, deciding whether to stick with Carr or not may be the biggest one of all.
