Beloved first baseman Freddie Freeman has yet to officially sign elsewhere in free agency, but the Atlanta Braves blockbuster trade for Matt Olson signals the end of an era.
Freeman's departure is a somber thought for all of Braves nation, from the top of the organization down. That was evident by the emotional media appearance from general manager Alex Anthopoulos.
Anthopoulos is not alone in the heartbreaking response to Freeman's impending departure. Teammate and Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson discusses his own thoughts on the Olson trade. His response came in the form of a touching goodbye.
Freddie Freeman Free Agency
Swanson had a simple reply when asked about Freeman's importance to the Braves' organization, saying "easiest thing to say is, number 5 should never be worn again."
Braves fans won't be surprised if the franchise does retire Freeman's No. 5 as quickly as possible. It's hard to put into words his impact on Atlanta, but a 12-year career with 271 career home runs, an MVP, five All-Star appearances capped off by a World Series puts things into perspective.
Fortunately, the trade means a continuation of great talent at 1B. Olson is two-time Gold Glove winner who averages 40 home runs and 105 RBIs across 162 games.
Swanson and the Braves enter the 2022 season with +1300 odds to repeat as World Series Champs on FanDuel Sportsbook.
