While the Chicago Cubs finished under .500 for a second straight year (and missed postseason baseball), there's remains a feeling of hope for the bright future. Chicago has more than $125 million under the luxury tax threshold (to spend in free agency) and possesses one of the top-10 minor league prospect systems in baseball.

Unfortunately, one of those prospects doesn't figure to be part of the roster at the beginning of the 2023 campaign.

The Cubs recently learned of a sad injury update on top prospect Alexander Canario.

Canario fractured his left ankle during his participation in the Dominican Winter League. Cubs insider Gordon Wittenmyer reported Canario underwent surgery to repair the issue, but will not likely be ready at the beginning of 2023.

It's an unfortunate update. Canario is ranked No. 9 on Chicago's list of top prospects. The 22-year-old outfielder erupted for 37 home runs and 97 RBIs across stints in High-A, Double-A and Triple-A baseball.
