The MLB's offseason calendar hit an important date on Sunday: the official opening of the league's international signing period. Unsurprisingly, a number of the league's highest-rated international prospects inked deals immediately after the signing period opening.

And the Chicago Cubs were a major beneficiary. Chicago dominated Sunday's headlines by reaching deals with three top-20 prospects.

The list of Chicago's new additions includes No. 6 Derniche Valdez, a shortstop from Dominican Republic, No. 14 Ludwing Espinoza, a shortstop from Venezuela, and No. 19 Angel Cepeda, also a shortstop from Dominican Republic.

MLB insider Jesse Sanchez revealed the Cubs spent just $5.2 million on these three highly-rated prospects. Valdez receieved $2.7 million, Espinoza at $1.5 million and Cepeda for just $1 million.

Chicago is clearly placing an emphasis on shortstop talent even after the marquee Dansby Swanson signing. But, with Valdez (16), Espinoza (17) and Cepeda (17) all under the age of 18, these signings are much more aligned for the greater future of the franchise.

Swanson will be 35 by the end of his 7-year contract, and each of these shortstop prospects will be right in the beginning of their baseball primes at 23 or 24 years old.
