Though the Washington Commanders got the win in Week 6, it came at a cost, as starting quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a fractured ring finger. Now the focus has been on who will fill in for Wentz, given the injury will sideline him for several games.
On Tuesday, Washington officially announced its plans for Week 7.
Head coach Ron Rivera told reporters Taylor Heinicke will start on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. The decision isn't a total surprise, though some had wondered if rookie Sam Howell would get the nod instead.
Wentz's injury now thrusts Heinicke back into a starting role after he was the Commanders' QB1 in 2021. He recorded a solid 3,419 passing yards, but underwhelmed with 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions across 16 games, opening the door for a new gunslinger to take over under center.
A healthy Curtis Samuel, plus rookie playmaker Jahan Dotson, should help Heinicke in this go-around. He also draws a familiar opponent in the Packers, whom he started against last season, throwing for 268 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT in 24-10 loss.
FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds peg Washington as moderate 5.5-point home underdogs ahead of this matchup.
