Chet Holmgren Rookie of the Year Odds Skyrocket Following Summer League Debut

Basketball fans and bettors all know that we don't want to overreact to Summer League action. The competition is nowhere near NBA caliber, and highly drafted rookies should absolutely tear it up. But even with that in mind, it's hard not to start getting excited about what Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Chet Holmgren did in his debut.

I'm not going to go as far as giving credence to the Kevin Durant-meets-Dirk Nowitzki comparisons he was getting on Twitter, but he did go off for 23 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 6 blocks and 1 steal in 24 minutes of action. That included going 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
The betting markets also seem to be sold on this dominant performance being more substantial than usual Summer League hype. The NBA odds on FanDuel Sportsbook show a huge shakeup in the Rookie of the Year race already.
Chet Holmgren Rookie of the Year Odds
Entering his Summer League debut, Holmgren had +550 odds to win Rookie of the Year. That had him trailing Paolo Banchero (+440) and tied with Jabari Smith (+550), leading Jaden Ivey (+700) and Keegan Murray (+900) to round out the top five. Holmgren's odds skyrocketed to +360 after Tuesday's performance, making him the new favorite by a solid margin.
The other potential future stars have still yet to debut, so we could see some more shakeups if they come out hot, but it's really looking like there might be something of substance behind the Chet Holmgren hype.
